It's Not About the Race
                                    by  Martha
My Soul Sisters are always telling me, “It’s not about the race.”  They tell me
there is much more to a triathlon than winning and getting perfect times and
being the perfect size.  Soul Sisters, in fact, are all shapes, sizes, and, in a
sense, genders! An integral element of the triumphant tears and joy of
Sisters crossing the finish line is the sacrifice of countless hours given by
men in their lives of babysitting, helping with household duties, cheering or
beating bongos on the sideline, pushing strollers, or sometimes just making
Soul Sisters laugh.

Soul Sisters come in all colors, too, but we meet in a place far beyond our
skin.  We overcome daunting obstacles. We believe in ourselves when
nobody else does. We encourage others along the way. We are sometimes
trampled and discouraged, but we rise again. We remind each other that
our beauty and our dignity goes way beyond our skin. We are beautiful, we
are strong, we are wise, we are triumphant, and we are secure and
complete in God’s loving protection. Physical lessons learned while training
for triathlon build our spirits.  In our daily life, most of us toil faithfully in tasks
that are considered lowly and insignificant. We know better and we are not
alone.

I am a Soul Sister with an official “Soul Sista” triathlon t-shirt even though
my skin is white as a (freckled) lily. At one time I worried if I belonged.  I
worried that I might be taking something that is not mine, that I might be
robbing other Soul Sisters in some way or causing discomfort. I am learning
along the way.

It’s not about the race.
